Modelling rapid changes of the Earth's main magnetic field

Earth's magnetic field undergoes rapid changes known as geomagnetic jerks on time scales shorter than one year.  These changes are presently poorly understood and challenging to study because of the presence of contaminating ionospheric contributions to the observations.

In this project a new scheme for selecting, processing, and characterizing noise in satellite magnetic data from ESA's Swarm mission, and the previous CHAMP mission will be designed, implemented, and tested. The aim is that this scheme should better isolate rapid core field changes of interest.
