A Hands-on Introduction to Ultra High Vacuum

Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) can be a fantastic tool in surface science and catalysis. However, it is also a very non-forgiving environment where even minor errors can easily end up in weeks of lost work. In this course you will lean the necessary skills to work with UHV.

Working with UHV is a very special kind of experimental work where one at one time can work with very small and delicate structures in an attempt to make a particular sample holder or apparatus work in a desired manner, but at other times one is busily occupied with a large wrench in an attempt to tighten two metal flanges. This very large dynamic range in the type of work makes working with UHV both fascinating and at times extremely frustrating - you will have plenty of opportu In the course we will go through the most important components of a UHV chamber and you will lean the precautions and methodologies that is necessary in order not to ruin the quality of the vacuum and the instruments on the chamber. During the course we will visit the research setups in the lab and lean how UHV techniques is applied in practical research. _x000D_ If the participants are interested, we will also look into what options one has to automatize some of the tasks involved in running and servicing a chamber - and if all goes well we will try to upgrade an old and trusty vacuum chamber with stepper motors to give it fully automatized sample handling!
