Landfills are still the most significant source to greenhouse gas emission from the waste sector in the European Union. There are huge differences on how much organic waste still is routed to landfills and how the methane - contained in landfill gas (LFG) is managed. How large a fraction is extracted and utilized for energy production?
Also the legislation in the different member states in respect to guidelines for LFG management are highly variable among member states.
The objective of the proposed project is to get an overview on landfill gas management in the EU and evaluate how legislation could be changed to include emission measurements as the basis for improving the LFG management to reduce the climate changes originating from emitted LFG.
