Metamaterial design for Epsilon-Near-Zero applications

Integrated photonic platforms are in need of new materials with controllable properties. In this theoretical project, the student will be able to simulate and explore different metamaterial geometries using COMSOL and find the conditions for a special material called Epsilon-Near-Zero, that could be later integrated in a photonic circuit. Other types of materials, such as for plasmonic applications could also be investigated.

·         Goals of the project

By the end of the project the student shall be able to independently perform simulations using the software COMSOL and understand the effective medium theory for metamaterials design.

·         Skills/knowledge acquired through the project

COMSOL and MATLAB software for theoretical analysis.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of electromagnetism.
