Pico second laser carving of single crystal diamond X-ray lenses

Modern synchrotron X-ray sources can produce X-ray beams that are fully coherent – like a laser beam, but instead of visible light the beam consists of X-rays. To preserve the coherent nature of the beam, which is crucial for several measurement techniques, the refractive optics used must be made in a single crystal material. Single crystal diamonds exhibit both good focusing capabilities at X-ray wavelengths and can survive the intense flux of the synchrotron beam.

In this project the aim is optimize an existing recipe on the pico second laser at Danchip to produce single crystal diamond lenses with a smooth surface finish and a small figure error. The laser is in the basement of the cleanroom building. The produced lenses should be characterized using an advanced optical microscope in the cleanroom.

The objectives of this project are:

·         Safety training to attain clean room access 

·         Partake in the planning of the activities, possibly using Design Of Experient, DOE, principles   

·         Training in the use of the pico second laser

o   Optimize the laser power and writing speed in excising scripts to lower the surface roughness of the produced diamond lenses

·         Training in the use of the optical Sensofar microscope

o   Do data treatment using existing software packages 

·         Summarize the findings in a brief rapport


The course is suitable for one to two students. Upon successful completion of the course a written recommendation from JJ X-Ray A/S will be given.
