Process dependent structural and electromagnetic properties of iron materials

The motor system (magnetic assembly + voice coil) of a loudspeaker is very important in determining the overall sound quality. Different iron grades have different structural and magnetic properties, and they all affect sound quality. In the process of producing the steel parts for the magnet systems there are also different manufacturing methods. In collaboration with one of our iron/steel suppliers we have succeeded to order iron parts that have been through different manufacturing processes such as pretreatment “annealing”, cold pressed and preheated. It is also possible to order the above processes in 3 different iron grades of carbon contents between 0.1% and 0.3%.

The task is to measure and identify the microstructure and electromagnetic properties of the material that result from different manufacturing processes using DTU Cen's advanced electron microscopes. If time permits (i.e. if the project type chosen by the student is sufficiently broad), the results are compared with electromagnetic and acoustic distortion measurements made at PointSource acoustic with home developed special equipment. These data involve Sound Pressure Level distortions, overall BH curve and inductance as function of position and frequency.
