Frame-less windows with 4-layer glazings

3-layer glazings have become the default solution in new buildings. However, 4-layer glazings (and 6, and 10 layers) have emerged in research labs. The rationale of moving towards better insulating windows is documented in preliminary studies showing that 50% of the room heat demand can be eliminated by moving to 4-layer glazings. At the same time the frame can be improved, perhaps eliminated, which opens up for a whole new way of constructing facades where the frame is integrated in the facade element, and the glazing unit is glued directly to the facade. The project will focus on multiple building physics related questions regarding heat conduction, radiation, mechanics, and assembly issues, but the exact content of the project will be developed together with the student.
