The project involves optical trapping of micro- and nano-meter sized diamonds eventually to be used for sensing by optical means. The interest in small diamonds is based on current research in the use of e.g. nitrogen-vacancy centers within the diamond - it turns out that such nitrogen-vacancy centers constitute a relatively simple quantum mechanical system that can e.g. provide magnetic sensing with optical readout. If one can optically trap and move the small diamond - or magnetic field sensor - a moveable miniature magnetic field sensor comes within reach. The project involves feasibility studies of the optical trapping of diamonds, including possibilities to design and construct a new optical setup in close collaboration with other students.
