Modelling and optimal control of smart energy buildings for a high penetration of renewables with Power-to-heat solutions

In Denmark as well as in many other countries, fluctuating renewable energy sources (RESs) account for an increasing share of power generation. In order to ensure that the transition to a greener economy is a good investment, RESs must be intelligently integrated into the energy system, where the challenge of market availability for non-dispatchable renewable energy is of paramount importance and requires investments for interconnection, energy storage and more dynamic multi-carrier energy systems.

Considering that buildings account for 40% of the total energy consumption in the European Union (mainly for space heating and hot water), there are relatively large heating/cooling and hot water demands that can be controlled, adapted and/or enhanced to perform a demand side management (DSM) function in order to provide grid services.

DSM strategies mainly involve the implementation of four types: (i) energy-efficient end-use devices (e.g. heat pumps and low temperature district heating (LTDH), etc.); (ii) additional equipment, systems and controls to enable load shaping (such as, thermal energy storage-hot water tanks); (iii) intelligent control systems (Home Automation System) for turning end-use devices on/off as required; and (iv) communication systems between end-users and external parties.

The students are provided by both real-time measurement (water supply temperature, water return temperature, flow rate, etc.) and forecast data (energy price, weather) to build up the dispatch models between the individual components (floor heating system, wash machine or dish washers, etc.) local controller and the energy management system (for example, an added external hierarchy supervisory controller); and to implement an optimal control for the power-to-heat solution.
