Evolution of microbial social interactions

Bacteria are simple unicellular organisms, but as a group they can migrate in swarms, hunt in ‘wolf-packs’, construct extremely resistant and water-proof biofilms or erect impressive fruiting bodies. All these complex behaviors are possible due to microbial social interactions. The way how bacteria cope with their neighbors can not only determine their survival but also their utility in biotechnology applications.  

In our lab we explore interactions within Bacillus subtilis, a wide spread soil-dwelling model organism. B. subtilis serves as a probiotic, commercially available biocontrol agent and a very prominent additive to construction materials due to water-proof properties of its biofilms.  B.subtilis can develop impressive 3D biofilm structures on solid and liquid surfaces. Biofilms rely on collective behavior of entire population and their properties (productivity, robustness, biomechanics, hydrophobicity, porosity ect) can easily change as a result of social conflicts within the population or confrontations with other micro- or macro-organisms.

During the project you will gain experience with:

-       molecular microbiology

-       diverse cell imaging techniques

-       diverse methods of biofilm characterization

-       evolutionary biology methods/experimental evolution

-       inter-department collaborations

-       handling plant and other host systems
