Design of diposable part for launch of ultraviolet light into small polymer tube openings

Patients with indwelling medical devices such as catheters and endotracheal tubes have a prevalence of life-threatening infections. It is recognized that biofilm formation at the inner surfaces of the medical tubing is a primary source of the infections. The continuous development of more powerful and small ultraviolet C (UVC) light emitting diodes (UVC-LEDs) open up for designed solutions for disinfecting the inner space of the medical tubing. The mechanical design of disposable/interface between the UVC light source and the medical tubing is challenged by the requirements for optimal launch of light in to the tubing, shielding the environment from unintended UVC exposure, closing features that allow easy grip and release of the light source from the interface. In addition, a cost-effective design that allows the disposable to be mass produced is a must.
