Atopic dermatitis-induced changes in gut immune homeostasis

Allergic disease often starts in childhood with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Children that develops AD are later at higher risk for developing food allergy, suggesting an underlying interaction between these diseases. Recent studies in animals found, that active AD exacerbates the elicitation of food allergy. We hypothesize, that the systemic inflammation associated with AD changes gut immune function, increases gut permeability, and/or affects the composition of the gut microbiota. In this project, we seek to identify possible changes in the gut immune system and microbiota during the induction of experimental AD in rats.

 

The project may involve one or more of the following investigations:

1)      Study gut tissue immune cells and morphology using histology

2)      Study gut tissue immune cellular composition and immune mediator expression using RT-PCR

3)      Study gene expression of gut tissue permeability biomarkers using RT-PCR

4)      Study gut microbiota composition using Next Generation Sequencing
