Size effect of nanoparticles and correlation to reactivity

In catalysis it is mandatory to have full control over the reactive sites that are exposed to the reactants. Often precious metals are used for catalytic reaction and thus it is highly desirable to get a high dispersion so that most atoms are sitting at the surface where they are accessible. Thus it has been common knowledge that the metal particles should be as small as possible. This has, however, proven not to be the entire truth. Often special sites are desired for a specific reaction that requires a certain particles size in order that these can be accommodated on the particle. Furthermore are the particles highly dynamic and changes shape and morphology dependent on the chemical potential of the surface and the support material. All these phenomena can be studied on real catalyst or on model systems in close collaboration with the very unique and expensive E-TEM facilities at Haldor Topsøe A/S under Stig Helvig supervision.

The project is carried out with Ib Chorkendorff as supervisor, but is mainly performed on Haldoe Topsøe A/S offering the possibility of experiencing the atmosphere in an industrial laboratory. _x000D_ Remarks: The project is supervised through regular meetings with the involved persons
