INVESTIGATION OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM COMPOSTING PLANTS

Composting is a commonly used treatment for organic waste including garden waste, sewage sludge, food waste and manure. Composting of organic waste entails generation of methane and nitrous oxide - two potent greenhouse gases (GHG). Accurate estimations of GHG emissions from organic waste composting are paramount for assessment of waste management technologies. Currently, GHG emissions from composting plants are evaluated following a relative simple model provided by national reporting schemes. The aim of this project is to measure GHG emissions from composting plants and investigate the relationship between measured emission rates and compost conditions, e.g. treatment, temperature, pH, carbon and nitrogen ratio. Measured GHG emission rates will be compared to estimations using current national reporting schemes.
