Effect of pH on chlorination by-product formation in swimming pools

The aim of this project is to investigate the effect of pH on the formation of chlorination by-product in swimming pools from body fluid analog.

In swimming pools, chlorine is added to ensure microbial safe water for the swimmers. However, chlorine also reacts with organic and inorganic compounds in the pool water and forms disinfection by-products. Many of these disinfection by-products are irritants and/or genotoxic. The organic and inorganic compounds are pollutants originating from the swimmers and from the filling water. Body fluid analog contains the main component in sweat and urine and is used to simulate the load originating from the swimmers.

Requirements

Students should preferably have basic experience with experimental work
