Ecological monitoring of freshwater using remote sensing from drones

There is a need to assess the ecological status of streams in Denmark and provide new monitoring tools to comply with the European Framework Directive (EFD).

Using drones, we are exploring how to characterize water properties from hyperspectral and thermal remote sensing like water chlorophyll-a concentration, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) concentration, turbidity or temperature.

 Additionally, the stream vegetation is a biological indicator of health and drones can help on phenotyping of floating vegetation. For optically shallow waters, macrophyte (submerged vegetation) phenotyping, sediment classification and stream bathymetry are currently being explored as holistic indicators of ecological integrity.

In the project we explore novel and effective methods to map the status of streams and freshwater ecosystems in Denmark using bio-optical modeling and machine learning approaches. The project is part of  RIVERSCAPES project. Collaboration with companies (ORBICON) and Regions is possible.
