Danish mammals in 3D

There are approximately 50 mammal species recorded in Denmark, and those are of interest in many situations. An example is the course on Danish fauna currently given at the University of Copenhagen. For the teaching purpose, it would be valuable to have a collection of 3D models of mammal crania available for online viewing. In this project, we will take steps in creating a first online portal with 3D models of the Danish mammals. The project is given in the collaboration between DTU and Natural History Museum of Denmark.

The project will involve some (not necessarily all) of the following steps:

  1. Scanning the mammal crania using the structured light scanner built and developed at DTU Compute. This will involve visits to the Natural History Museum.
  2. Refining and processing obtained scans. This consist of cleaning and matching the obtained point clouds, reconstructing the surface meshes, and refining the surface appearance.
  3. Making scans available for online viewing. For this, we plan to make use of an available software, which is to be incorporated in the first version of our online portal.
