Measuring the temperature of stars

The surface temperature of the stars can be determined by measurement of their color index, which is obtained by photometry with two filters. To perform this project the students will autonomously plan and conduct hands-on astronomical observations with an amateur telescope at DTU Space. The telescope is equipped with a CCD camera and two (B and V) filters. This equipment can be connected to a computer to control the telescope and take images with the camera. The images are then numerically analyzed by photometry to measure the magnitude of the stars through the two filters.
The project contains a large part of literature search for the students to learn about the detailed techniques of photometry, also including the use of the different components of our equipment. With this project you will learn to plan an observation campaign, as well as produce and process scientific data. Based on your methodical work in relating experiment to theory, you will present your observational methods in a structured report to interpret, evaluate and summarize your results.

Requirements

Astrophysics, some experience in amateur astronomy.
