Nanoparticles for Conversion of Sustainable Energy

In the future there will be a demand for storing electrical energy from solar and wind into chemical energy. This will require new classes of catalysts which can hydrogenate CO2 or N2 into valuable chemicals. The dicovery approach of such new catalyst will be done synthesising mass-selected cluster/nanoparticles using a dual magnetron. Here the nanoparticles can be formed sputtering two metals in an reactive atomosphere forming oxides, nitrides, sulphides, and phosphides.   The mass-selected nanoparticles can be characterised in the connected UHV chamber and subsequent be tested either electrochemically or in our micro reactor platform designed to handle small amounts of catalysts. This project is part of an ERC-ADV grant. Doing a master on this project means getting hands on advanced UHV equipment and the process for testing catalytic activity.
