CFD simulation of water flow in sponges and micro-organisms

Sponges are one of the earliest evolved, and implest, groups of animals.  Sponges are sessile animals with water-pumping choanocyte chambers. The beating flagella in thses chambers are driving the flow through the complex channels through the sponge body. Sponges also share characteristics with choanoflagellates, a group of filter feeding flagellates believed to be the sister group to all animals including sponges. Choanoflagellates are unicellular aquatic organisms with a single flagellum that drives a feeding current through a funnel-shaped collar filter on which bacteria-sized prey are caught. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) we model the beating flagellum and the complex flow in chaonocyte chambers as well as around choanoflagellates. We offer a number of projects related to the hydrodynamics of micro-organisms including the interaction and capture of prey.
