Greater Copenhagen area

Overall project description

The project will primarily be focused on evaluation of the damping estimation methods available in our LAC department. An extension of the methods may be considered upon successful completion of the primary goals of the project.

Detailed project description

The damping level of monopiles has an important impact on the structural design of turbine foundations. Therefore, accurate estimation of this parameter is of high importance to the designers to ensure safety without overdesigning the foundations. A damping estimation methodology is developed by the LAC department. Validation of the method and identification of potentials for improvement are to be done within this cooperation.

Project overview

The scope of the project is to validate and improve damping estimation methods. The project progress will be assessed on the basis of the documentation made at different stages of the project.

Technical content

  • The project may include analysis of the following:
  • literature review of methods for output-only system identification such as OMA methods
  • development of a numerical model for investigation/verification of methods
  • numerical investigation of one or more of the methods including statistical data analysis of the estimators
  • application of one or more of the methods for aeroelastic simulations
  • documentation of the investigations
  • application of methods for field measurements of mechanical vibrations of offshore WTGs
  • development of quality check procedure
  • implementation of tools for automated data analysis
  • comparison of damping levels across wind farms.

Technical University of Denmark

For almost two centuries DTU, Technical University of Denmark, has been dedicated to fulfilling the vision of H.C. Ørsted – the father of electromagnetism – who founded the university in 1829 to develop and create value using the natural sciences and the technical sciences to benefit society.

Today, DTU is ranked as one of the foremost technical universities in Europe, continues to set new records in the number of publications, and persistently increases and develops our partnerships with industry, and assignments accomplished by DTU’s public sector consultancy.
