Advanced metabolic engineering of muconic acid cell factories

The yeast metabolic engineering group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at DTU is looking for ambitious MSc students interested in carrying out their research project in the field of yeast metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. You will work alongside enthusiastic postdocs, PhDs and other students in the Yeast metabolic engineering group led by Dr. Irina Borodina (http://www.biosustain.dtu.dk/research/research-groups/yeast-metabolic-engineering/student-projects).

Research project

We currently have research projects involved in the engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for muconic acid production from municipal solid waste hydrolysate as part of the EU funded DAFIA project (http://www.dafia-project.eu/). Students will work on ambitious new strategies to increase muconic acid productivities with the ultimate goal of delivering an industrially relevant strain to our project partners for commercialization. While the overarching goal of the research project must be related to the production of muconic acid or its industrially relevant intermediates, we have identified several promising strategies to investigate, allowing students to tailor their project to suit their strengths and interests.

Prerequisites

You should have a BSc in molecular biology/biotechnology/metabolic engineering or equivalent and currently be working towards an MSc in a similar subject. Students should have a solid understand of the principles of metabolic engineering and cell factory design, and be familiar with the latest advancements in genome engineering. We encourage all our students to work towards a publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal; we therefore seek highly motivated students who can work creatively and independently.
