Machine learning for 3D tracking of microparticles in lab-on-a-chip devices

The aim to this project is to develop a machine-learning algorithm able to recognize a specific type of images, corresponding to spheres and ellipsoids in different positions and orientations observed through a microscope. This project is a first step toward an automated image vision software to detect position and orientation of cells in acoustofluidic devices, which would have a great impact in the development and operation of future biomedical lab-on-a-chip devices. Your starting point in the project is the general defocusing particle tracking (GDPT, see attached paper), a 3D particle tracking method that uses the defocusing properties of spherical objects observed through a microscope to measure their 3D position. Your concrete task will be to look at images of more complex objects (ellipsoids), created artificially with a synthetic image generator (SIG), and to create an original approach based on machine-learning to correctly identify position and orientation of these objects. You will develop the machine-learning algorithm in the Python language, using preferably PyTorch as machine-learning platform, but other options may be chosen.
