Imaging Geochemical Heterogeneity and Contaminant Sources in Groundwater

The spatial distribution of reactive minerals in subsurface porous media is a main control for groundwater quality. The localization of geochemical heterogeneity is of pivotal importance to understand contaminant transport in the subsurface and to manage groundwater resources. This project proposes to image geochemical heterogeneity based on high-resolution sensor measurement of common water quality parameters and inverse reactive transport modeling. The new methodology will be tested in laboratory flow-through experiments in increasingly more complex geochemically and physically heterogeneous setups. The project will entail both experimental work and reactive transport simulation based on innovative techniques for both forward and inverse modeling.
