Methane is a strong greenhouse gas. Landfills are a significant contributor to methane in the atmosphere. We are a small research group who have developed systems based on microbial methane oxidation processes to reduce the methane emission from landfills. The Danish government has initiated a large project support scheme with a frame of 170 million Danish Crowns and the aim of establishing of biocover systems on up to 100 old Danish landfills (http://mst.dk/virksomhed-myndighed/affald/deponering/biocover-tilskudsordning/, in Danish).
There are still many open questions and student projects could be carried out with activities including lab experiments , field studies and modelling. The projects wil be carried out with Professor Charlotte Scheutz as co-supervisor and may imply collaboration with external partners (landfill owners or consultant companies).
