A Field Study on Human Exposure to CO2 in Office Rooms with mechanical ventilation

Present standards define maximum CO2 concentration level in the air inhaled by occupants. The indoor CO2 concentration is often measured in only one location in the room - either in the exhaust room air or at one of the walls. This project’s aim is to assess in practice occupants’ exposure to indoor CO2 concentration in ventilated office rooms and to verify if there is difference between the CO2 concentration level in the air inhaled by the occupants and at the CO2 level of the air exhausted room air. A breathing thermal manikin will be used to resemble an average occupant and measure the CO2 concentration in the inhaled air. The manikin will be placed in several ventilated rooms at the Danish company Rambøll. Rooms for different use, such as offices, meeting room, etc. will be included in the measurements. CO2 measurements will be done in the air inhaled by the manikin, at the exhaust, walls and several locations in the occupied zone. Thermal comfort measurements will be performed as well. An important aim will be to identify the difference between the CO2 concentration measured in the air inhaled by the manikin representing an occupant and the exhaust air. An important aim will be to identify whether the difference remains within acceptable range (within the accuracy of the measurements) and if not to update the recommendations in the standards for maximum allowed CO2 concentration at the exhaust.

This project is planned to start 1 August 2019 till 31 December 2019.
