Amminex Emissions Technology (AET) is a Danish clean-tech company which offers a superior technology for reduction of NOx emissions from diesel vehicles. NOx, a generic term for nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, has a strong impact on environment and humans’ health, however it can be reduced to nitrogen through selective catalytic reaction (SCR) with ammonia.AET developed a unique way of storing and transporting ammonia in Ammonia Storage and Delivery System ASDSTM. The system is based on a solid (salt) which binds ammonia and can release it in a controlled manner. When it does, a porous structure is formed, which can again be saturated with ammonia – this cycle can be repeated hundreds of times. Absorption, however, is limited by kinetics, diffusion and thermal properties. In addition, the microstructure undergoes changes while cycling. All the limitations lead to inhomogeneous distribution of ammonia in the salt.


The idea behind this project is to investigate microstructure evolution and spatial development of different phases upon saturation with ammonia by means of X-ray tomography. The aim is to integrate the results to flow and damage models, allowing us to find a link between performance and changes in the microstructure of the material.

The project will be conducted at DTU Energy in collaboration with Amminex Emissions Technology, DTU Physics, DTU Compute and Manchester X-Ray Imaging Facility, and will be a part of The Alliance for Imaging of Energy Materials (CINEMA) project, funded by The Danish Council for Strategic Research.

Amminex Emissions Technology A/S has extensive experience in running projects in collaboration with universities on bachelor, master and PhD levels.
