Sea ice freeboard-to-thickness conversion by use of passive microwave

Current methods to estimate sea ice thickness from Space are based on altimetry measurements, e.g. the European Space Agency CryoSat-2 satellite mission. However, altimetry measures only the part of the sea ice above the sea surface. By use of hydrostatic assumptions depending on snow depths and ice types, an estimate of the sea ice thickness can be given. The snow depth and ice types are varying locally, and the usual procedure is to include additional information from outdated climatologies and existing space derived maps of sea ice types.  

In this project, we aim at making a direct freeboard-to-thickness conversion based on input from brightness temperatures from passive microwave space missions, as these are dependent on snow depth and sea ice types.
