The detection and identification of molecules has immense impact not only on fundamental research but also on the various applications from environmental monitoring to medical and clinical diagnosis. The mid-infrared vibrational spectroscopy offers a unique label-free detection scheme thanks to the characteristic light absorption features of molecules in the mid-infrared wavelengths.  However, the sizes of molecules are typically on the order of nanometers as opposed to microns of mid-infrared wavelengths, three orders of magnitude difference, resulting in weak absorption features and making detection of low concentration and small changes extremely challenging.

This project aims at developing a sensing platform based on a novel nanostructures in order to enhance the sensitivity of molecular detection for mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy.

In this project, the student will tackle either one of two challenges:

1). Design of nanostructures by using COMSOL software (Theoretical MSc project), or

2). Fabrication of nanostructures at DTU Nanolab (Experimental MSc project)

for sensing applications. Depending on the interests of the candidate 1) and 2) can also be combined.

For the theoretical project, the candidate will perform numerical modelling and analysis of nanostructures by using COMSOL or LUMERICAL software at the “Metamaterials group” at DTU Fotonik.

Moreover, for the experimental project, the candidate will perform nanofabrication tasks in Nanolab’s clean room facilities to develop a fabrication process of nanostructures that can be used for molecular sensing by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.

Technical University of Denmark

For almost two centuries DTU, Technical University of Denmark, has been dedicated to fulfilling the vision of H.C. Ørsted – the father of electromagnetism – who founded the university in 1829 to develop and create value using the natural sciences and the technical sciences to benefit society.

Today, DTU is ranked as one of the foremost technical universities in Europe, continues to set new records in the number of publications, and persistently increases and develops our partnerships with industry, and assignments accomplished by DTU’s public sector consultancy.
