Comparing the toxicity of different metal oxide nanoparticles

A wide variety of nanoparticles are being produces and used in an increasing range of products. One of the most commonly used groups of nanoparticles today is the metal oxide nanoparticles. These particles behave very different in the aquatic environment with respect to aggregation, dissolution… and probably also toxicity?

The aim of this project is to carry out ecotoxicological tests with different types of metal oxide particles, to make a comparison of toxic effects and the reasons behind these effects. Particles can include: ZrO2, CeO2, TiO2 and ZnO2 and possible test organisms include algae, crustaceans and sediment worms._Investigations on generation of reactive oxygen species and dissolution of metal ions can be included in the project.
