Increasing growth in the global population has put heavy pressure on our current food system. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that global food production should double by 2050 in order to feed the population. Particularly, proteins are an important and increasingly sought-after source of feed and human nutrition. However, the conventional agricultural protein production are currently not environmentally and climatically sustainable. For example, the rapidly growing South American soybean production leads to the destruction of rainforest, loss of biodiversity, pesticide pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. If one can therefore succeed in developing new and protein-rich feed or food alternatives with minimal footprint on climate, environment and nature, it can potentially have great significance for the possibilities of saving the agricultural land, reducing the global emissions of greenhouse gases and other environmental impacts.

In this context, single cell protein, which is independent of arable land, has been considered as a promising alternative protein source. Single cell proteins (SCP) are the dried cells of protein rich microorganisms, which are used as protein supplement in human foods or animal feeds.

Objective:

This experimental MSc project or special course aims at studying the inhibitory factors during the process of methanotrophic protein production and finding out the optimum conditions. Both mix methanotrophic culture and pure cultures will be investigated.

Requirements:

Candidates should have a basic background of microbiology and basic skills of conducting experiments such as using pipettes and preparing solutions. Besides, fluent spoken English and good command of writing and figures drawing are also needed.

Note that 30 ECTS credits is 5 months and 35 ECTS credits is 6 months master project.
